5 Reasons Why Our Prayers Aren't Working
“Meta-studies (concerning prayer) have been performed showing evidence only for no effect or a potentially small effect.” Wikipedia
1. OUR PRAYERS ARE NOT EFFECTUAL AND FERVENT
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
The Greek word for effectual fervent, is energeō, and means to be operative, be at work, or to display one's activity. Too often, without any activity, we approach prayer as we would a Jeanie in a bottle. Does God owe us three wishes? On the contrary, we owe Him. He gave one commission to us all. Go out and make disciples (Mathew 28:19). We've substituted that activity for church attendance; evangelism for praise and worship. Praise and worship without soul winning activity is empty flattery. If you told your child to clean their room and they did not, would you be moved by their compliments of how wonderful a parent you are?
Righteous in the Greek is translated “one whose way of thinking, feeling, and acting is wholly conformed to the will of God.” We can’t conform to the will of God if we don’t know what it is. The bible says:
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:
because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee,
that thou shalt be no priest to me:
seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God,
I will also forget thy children.”
3. OUR PRAYERS ARE SPORADIC
Pray without ceasing;
1 Thessalonians 5:17
4. OUR PRAYERS ARE REACTIONARY
We act on our own will. We do what we want to do, then, pray and ask God to bless or cover us. The bible says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
5. WITHOUT RELATIONSHIP
Would you appreciate your child speaking to you only when they wanted something? One Sunday morning, I had the privilege of baptizing eight people. All of which affirmed publicly their decision that Jesus is their Lord, Savior, Master and Owner. Maybe, it’s time for another dip.
